Attachment Style

Start the new year by fostering a healthier, more connected relationship with this

practical exercise inspired by Attached by Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. This

activity will help couples identify and bridge attachment style differences, building a

foundation of trust and understanding.

Step 1: Identify Your Attachment Styles

Take 10 minutes to individually complete the attachment style quiz from Attached's

official guide. Note whether you and your partner lean toward secure, anxious, or

avoidant attachment.

Step 2: Share and Reflect

Set aside 20 minutes to discuss your results with your partner. Use these guiding

questions to foster empathy:

  • How do you feel your attachment style affects the way you communicate?

  • What triggers stress or disconnect for you in our relationship?

  • How can we create a sense of safety for each other?

Step 3: Create an Action Plan

Together, choose one small habit to implement in the next week based on your styles.

  • For anxious partners: Practice asking for reassurance calmly when feeling

unsure.

  • For avoidant partners: Set aside time to share one personal thought or feeling

each day.

  • For secure partners: Use your stability to support and guide your partner through

challenges.

Bonus Tip: Track Progress

At the end of the week, reflect on how these adjustments impacted your relationship.

Repeat this exercise as needed to strengthen your bond.

Couples counseling can help you learn how to use these tools specifically in your

relationship. For personalized support, schedule a session with me at Black Stone

Counseling.
