EXERCISE TO USE PRINCIPLES DISCUSSED IN THE BOOK:

Exercise: Exploring Emotional Needs

Objective:

To deepen understanding and connection in your relationship by exploring and expressing emotional needs using principles from "Hold Me Tight" by Dr. Sue Johnson.

Instructions:

1. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you and your partner can have an open and uninterrupted conversation.

2. Begin by discussing the concept of emotional needs as outlined in "Hold Me Tight." Define emotional needs as the core feelings and desires that contribute to a sense of fulfillment and connection in a relationship.

3. Take turns identifying and sharing one of your primary emotional needs. It could be the need for validation, affection, appreciation, understanding, or any other emotional need that feels significant to you.

4. As each partner shares their emotional need, the other partner practices active listening and empathy. Reflect back what you heard to ensure understanding and validation.

5. After both partners have shared their emotional needs, discuss how you can meet each other's needs more effectively. Brainstorm specific actions, gestures, or behaviors that align with meeting these emotional needs.

6. Choose one or two actionable steps that you both agree on implementing to fulfill each other's emotional needs. These steps should be practical and manageable within your relationship dynamics.

7. Commit to practicing these actions consistently and providing feedback to each other on their effectiveness in meeting emotional needs.

8. Take a moment to express gratitude for the opportunity to deepen understanding and connection in your relationship through this exercise.

1.                          Set a reminder to revisit this exercise periodically to reassess emotional needs, adjust actions as needed, and continue nurturing a strong emotional bond.
